Thank you, Rejectionist. When I was a chauffeur, I drove Andy twice and the second time, we got to talk about lots of cool stuff, like when I was at Club Sept in Paris the same night he was. He wanted to know all the clubs I liked to go to. He was really nice and tipped me well. I picked him up at the same Lexington Avenue address, so he must have lived there a long time.
That little P.S. is the extra kick when you're already down. What did they think he'd do? Leave it there out of spite? Reject MY gift, will they? Well, I'll show them...grumble, grumble...it was a GIFT.
Reminds me of a certain line from a certain rejection letter I received only a few months ago.

REALLY? I didn't know that. If you hadn't said anything I'd be all worried that my story was in some kind of rejection limbo. Not only did you EFFING HATE my story, but you also, apparently, believe that I am a MORON. Thanks.
Awesome... feeling a little better now. Thanks :)
And he was offering to GIVE IT AWAY! Thanks for the perspective...
YES!!!!
thank you :)
I feel heartened. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this. Brought a smile to my face and a little ha ha laugh.
Happy Friday.
I wonder if later the committee went around slapping each other and themselves for that decision.
It's tough when you can't give it away. Maybe they would have liked the picture of the soup can better...
Nice! I love reading about this kind of stuff. It's good to remember that even the masters of their particular craft were rejected at least once.
Thanks for this!
Dear Rej
Nope. Didn't help.
Dang.
That is the ultimate rejection letter.
Success is the sweetest revenge.
I wonder how long it took Alfred Barr Jr. and his buddies to see their mistake.
My verification word is:prepu
When you get a heads up that you are about to step in it.
Damn.
I'm looking forward to the day when I can frame all of my rejections and laugh and laugh and laugh.
Ouch. Hindsight is a bitch.
They must have been crazy. Who doesn't like shoes?
Very encouraging! Cool - thanks for posting this. :)
Everyone faces rejection. Now I'm sure of it.
JK Rowling was rejected by 12 publishers-- I wonder how those 12editors feel now?
At least it was personalized. A real live person signed it.
Whatever happened to that Warhol guy anyway?

Curious about Alfred H. Barr Jr.'s career path after this letter.
But I can understand their decision who wants all that clutter?

That is awesome - and yes, it makes that stack of rejection letters a *little* easier to bear. Just a little.
The P.S. was the best part. Oopsie, MOMA!
Wow...maybe my kids will see my rejects posted on a wall and laugh one day. As long as it's not still MY wall. LOL!
Oh dear. I've been hearing similar tales for awhile now, but seeing it in black and white? Ouch.
Sure, he had the last laugh, as we all hope to do, but that still stings. He couldn't even *give* his work away for free. Sheesh!
This is awesome!
I received a copy of this letter when I purchased an Andy Warhol bag. Its interesting and pretty cruel, too.
One day, editors will kick themselves for not taking my Ms.
One day . . .
Wow, thanks. This puts a lot of creative rejections I've been dealing with from jobs, friends & family in perspective.
