Late to the party (due to being out of town) but thanks for the thoughtful interview. I loved 8th Grade Superzero and have been busy recommending it to my students, many of whom I see in the book. The novel portrays real kids who aren't "'superstars' or notorious ones" but who have the potential to change the world around them.

And I'm so glad you kept trying to sell the novel even though people said it didn't have enough of a "hook." We would all be worse off had you given up.

Hi, I'm usually too timid to comment, only read, but this is a great interview. I have always been a huge L'Engle and Lewis fan myself, and really try to get my three boys into reading as much as possible.

I'm going to get this book for my middle schooler, I think it sounds terrific.

This is a great interview. You really are an inspiration!

I also loved Their Eyes and wrote my fourth year English seminar on it (and Beloved - it was an African Women Writer's seminar). Beautiful book. That opening ALONE. Any librarian who doesn't know Hurston is not a librarian.

I'll be spreading the word about Super Zero and checking it out right away!

Holy crap...you are so full of awesome. The books you mention as favorites are all at the tip top of my list. I loved Till We Have Faces and I still re-read my L'Engle books. And Their Eyes Were Watching God was transformational for me. I adore that book.

OH. And. Your librarian told you there was no such person as Zora Neale Hurston? What? How is that possible????
