Le R. Pere is only tormented by the unscientific nature of the various leftist treatises and not with the spirit of energetic labor applied to effect an enlightenment of the misguided mind of the adored favorite or, at least, the initiation of the rehabilitative process that is of perceived need on the part of the rejectionist. On the list of missives offering enlightenment to the R class is the tedious Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet.

The treatise penned by Mr. Sachs is hopeful but dreamlike. Such as the assistant who views a beautiful world outside her 40th floor window and, in her wonderment, steps out for a better view…only to experience gravity as a law of physics. The author posits that "Earth has the energy, land, biodiversity, and water resources needed to feed humanity and support long-term economic prosperity for all. The problem is that markets might not lead to their wise and sustainable use." Therefore the reader deduces that markets are less wise than the alternative enlightened decisions of the government class. Quite an alarming proposition that reveals the law of unintended consequences.

Le R. Pere endorses the recommendation for different reasons. The volume is a useful gift for the adored ones who experience sleep deprivation…but the continuing adoration is the greater spirit.

The story is about a young girl who is the lone passenger on a ship captained by a murderous, yet refined, madman. The crew decides mutiny is the answer -- which means Charlotte has to choose whose side she's on.

A delightful read of adventures on the high seas. Always recommend this one.

The Devil In The White City is fantastic. The story of the creation of the World's Fair is actually more interesting than the serial killer part, but the book is simply fantastic overall. Supposedly, Paramount bought film rights, but I don't know if it's in production.

I'm glad Loretta above mentioned the Green Knowe books. I thought they were great when I was a kid, but The Wolves of Willoughby Chase always struck me as a tiny bit over-written, especially the bad guys.

And I hope to God none of my kids get me any Carlos Luis Zafon books. I've been slogging through Shadow of the Wind for the past week on my daughter's recommendation. I think she got my expectations a little too high.

I also loved Wolves. Another classic children's series that I've always thought was underappreciated was the Green Knowe books. And, looking them up on Wiki just now to be sure I was spelling Knowe right, I see that there are SIX books and not just the FOUR that I've already read.

Guess that's something for my wishlist. :D

Joan Aiken is the best, best, best! We reread those books all the time and give them to adults on a regular basis. If you can find the first editions, or some of the paperback editions, Edward Gorey did the frontispieces and they are FAB.

I also LOVED The Wolves of Willoughby Chase as a kid--very scary...NIGHTBIRDS ON NANTUCKET was great too (I think by the same author). I loved ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG, which would be a great gift book--thought-provoking but an easy and uplifting read.
